2013 Ocular Photography Contest

Generously sponsored by

The Primary Care Section would like to announce that the 2013 Annual Academy Photography Contest will open on July 1st and close at midnight PST on August 15th, with the winners being announced by September 30th.  Optometrists may submit up to two (2) entries per category (listed below).  Digital color, red free, or fluorescein images of the anterior segment/adnexa or posterior segment must be submitted in one of the following formats: jpg, tiff, gif or bmp. These images must remain in a non-modified manner, i.e. no enhancements by either proprietary software from which the image was captured, or by programs such as Adobe Photoshop™. No 35 mm slides, photographic prints, neuro-imaging studies, or ultrasound studies will be accepted. Multiple images, either sequential in time (as in a fluorescein angiogram), or using two different technologies to image the same entity (as in a color photo and fluorescein angiography), or to fully appreciate the size of the clinical entity may also be submitted but will be limited to four images per series. Previously, contestants were able to submit images obtained utilizing such equipment as OCT, GDx and HRT. These images will no longer be accepted as entries into the photography contest. A listing of the acceptable images is found below.
The images should be submitted under one of the following categories:

  • Posterior Segment: Color, Fluorescein Angiography/ICG
  • Anterior Segment: Lids, Cornea/Conjunctiva, Contact Lens, Iris, Lens, Angle/Gonioscopy

The images will be assigned a number upon submission and will be graded by a panel of judges “blind” to the photographer’s name. Each of the submissions will be graded using seven different criteria each of which is scored 1-10. The criteria used are as follows: Focus, Exposure, Field of View, Difficulty of Capturing Image, Absence of Distracting Elements, Lighting and Visual Impact (Wow! Factor).

The Grand Prize winner from each category will receive complimentary registration to Academy 2013 Seattle and will have his or her photograph published in the OVS Journal, as well as in the show daily, AAO Times. In addition to the two Grand Prize winners the contest will award a 1st runner up, 2nd runner up and 5 honorable mentions.  All of the winning submissions will be assembled into a photo tower which will be on display at the Academy meeting.

Please complete the Submission Form for each separate image or group of images. All of the images and the Submission Form should be attached to an email sent to AcademyPhotographyContest@gmail.com with attention to Dr. Carla Engelke.  Please note that incomplete submissions will not be considered.  Also any image containing potentially identifiable features or information will be discarded.
