Graduating in 2013? Apply for Fellowship in 2013 and We'll Waive Your 2014 Dues

Congratulations to the 2013 graduating class! As you near graduation, we would like to remind you of a special offer available for recent graduates. Submit your Fellowship application in 2013 and we will waive your application fee and first year of dues. If you are interested, please complete and return the Fellowship application (PDF). If you plan to do a residency after graduation, please be sure to notify the Academy office so we can ensure your student membership remains valid throughout your residency. Also, be on the lookout for more information from your Faculty-Student Liaison about a special event at your school where you can learn more about Fellowship in the Academy.

Clinical Pearls from the 2012 Academy Scavenger Hunt

The 2012 Academy Scavenger Hunt, generously sponsored by Essilor and VSP, was held on Friday, October 26. An impressive 92 students from 13 different teams representing 11 schools took part in the activity in the Academy exhibit hall. Here are a few of the clinical pearls that student teams uncovered during the competition:

  • Clinical Pearl #1 from an Academy Fellow: “When looking at the fundus, make sure to use the red free filter.”
  • Clinical Pearl #2 from an Academy Lecture: “For optic nerve evaluations, you must determine if abnormalities are congenital or acquired.”
  • Clinical Pearl #3 from an Academy Lecture: “AMD treatments are aimed at the complement cascade.”

Student Fellowship at Academy 2013 Seattle

The Student Fellowship program is a great opportunity for students to engage in cutting edge knowledge and technology through lectures, workshops, posters and much more! The program is designed to help you develop your skills as an optometric or vision science professional. The entire process of obtaining Student Fellowship will take place at Academy 2013 Seattle. Students who successfully complete the requirements will obtain a Student Fellow lapel pin, a Student Fellow certificate, and complimentary registration for Academy 2014 Denver. Access to Optometry and Vision Science

Student membership in the Academy offers you several benefits that will enhance your educational experience, including access to Optometry and Vision Science (OVS) online. To access your online subscription, visit www.aaopt.org and log-in using your Academy website username and password. OVS can also now be accessed on your iPad! Click here for further instructions on how to download the app and register with the publisher. If at any time you would prefer to receive hard copies of OVS via mail, please email Jenny Brown at JennyB@aaoptom.org.

Scientific Program Submission Window Opens May 1st

The Academy's Scientific Program offers scientists, educators, students and clinicians the opportunity to exchange the latest information in optometry and vision science in two formats, research paper presentations and scientific posters. Please visit the Papers and Posters webpage for more information or to download resources on how to construct your Scientific Program abstract. The abstract submission window will be open from May 1 through May 31, 2013.

The Academy will offer a limited number of $750 student travel fellowships to assist students who are accepted as paper/poster presenters with travel expenses to attend Academy 2013 Seattle. More information on student travel fellowships will be made available this summer.

Residents Day will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Academy 2013 Seattle. Residents Day is a forum where residents have the opportunity to present interesting case reports or the results of research projects. All current residents are invited to showcase their work.
