The Douglas Hopkins Primary Care Fellowship Fund

Doug Hopkins

Douglas Hopkins, OD, FAAO, a leader with the Primary Care Section and the Academy passed unexpectedly in 2007. Family and friends established the Douglas Hopkins Primary Care Fellowhip with a goal of $80,000. Over $60,000 has already been donated or pledged, including an extraordinary  $40,000 pledge from Doug’s widow, Roberta. Roberta was recognized at the 2007 AOF Celebration Luncheon in Tampa and also received Doug’s Diplomate Award in Primary Care on his behalf at the Academy Banquet.

Academy Fellow Jeff Magun writes:

"I had known Doug for nearly 20 years, since the early development of the Diplomate Program in Primary Care. Working alongside Doug was both a joy and an honor. As we worked hard to design the Diplomate Program, Doug showed immense creativity, leadership and understanding of the definition and the practice of Primary Care Optometry. He exemplified that when he served as Chair of the Primary Care Section and Chair of the Primary Care Section Diplomate program.

Doug Hopkins had a larger-than-life presence in his leadership of our section and represented us for two years at the Academy’s planning meetings. Everyone who came into contact with Doug saw extraordinary qualities. His firm confidence and quiet, but intelligent, capability destined him to be a major force in the future of the Academy. In Denver 2006, he narrowly failed to be elected to the Academy’s Board of Directors. He was told by many not to lose heart, because of his potential to have a remarkable and lasting impact.

For those of you who did not have the joy of knowing Doug, I can tell you that my humble effort to describe him really falls short of who he was. Please take heart in knowing that a truly wonderful colleague gave everything to make Primary Care a leading force in the vision care field.
"

The Foundation and the Academy's Primary Care Section invites everyone who knew and loved Doug to make a donation in his memory to the Doug Hopkins Fund.
