(a) Optometrists who are licensed to practice at the highest level permitted by law in their jurisdiction, and
(b) Scientists, educators, librarians, administrators, and editors who have accredited themselves and optometry by their contributions to optometry or vision science.
The Academy membership consists of Fellows (including Emeritus, Honorary and Life Fellows), student members, and candidates for fellowship. Although other categories of membership may have similar benefits, only Fellows may use the "FAAO" designation.
SECTIONS
Of particular interest to certain fellows are the eight sections devoted to optometric specialties, including: Binocular Vision, Perception and Pediatrics; Cornea and Contact Lenses; Disease; Low Vision; Optometric Education; Primary Care Optometry; Public Health; and Visual Science. Several sections offer a Diplomate program challenging fellows to study for a higher level of competence.

CHAPTERS
Local chapters make it easy to keep in touch through social functions and study between regular Annual Meetings.
STUDENTS
Optometric students can become candidates immediately upon graduation. They attend the Annual Meeting gratis and travel assistance may be available. The opportunity to "network" with practicing and academic optometrists is of great value to student membership.
