Shouldn't you know what really matters when it comes to macular degeneration? The Low Vision Section is very pleased to co-sponsor this year’s Hirsch Research Symposium on age-related macular degeneration. AMD is still the leading cause of low vision in the US among those over 55 years of age and, as such, patients with AMD are always among the most commonly encountered patients in low vision practices. This symposium will help equip you to care for these patients by bringing you up to speed in several important areas of both research and clinical care. This is a "must attend" symposium for those interested in caring for patients with AMD!
Monroe J. Hirsch Research Symposium, co-sponsored by the Research Committee and the Low Vision Section "Not Your Grandmother's Macular Degeneration: Current Issues in AMD" Thursday, October 25 8:00 - 10:00 AM - North Ballroom A/B-C (two hours) The entire framework for Age-Related Macular Degeneration has shifted dramatically in the last 15 years, enhancing our understanding of the etiology, genetics, and treatments for AMD. That changing landscape will be reviewed, looking back at important milestones, while looking forward to what the future may hold. Our expert speakers will discuss those areas, including how new treatments for AMD are influencing the ways in which optometrists encounter and care for AMD patients. Speakers include: Maureen Maguire, PhD, The Scheie Eye Institute, University of Pennsylvania Judith Goldstein, OD, FAAO, The Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University Marco Zarbin, MD, PhD, The Institute of Ophthalmology & Visual Science, New Jersey Medical School.

The Academy Low Vision Diplomate Program is alive and active, with several candidates taking examinations at this year's meeting. Ever thought about becoming a diplomate? This is a great time to take the plunge and become a candidate. Low Vision Diplomates range from professors like current Diplomate Chair Dr. Roanne Flom to small town optometrists like me. Talk to Roanne Flom, Robert Greer, or me (for Clinical Diplomate) or David Loshin (for Research Diplomate). For a listing of the current members of the LV Diplomate Executive Committee, go here: http://www.aaopt.org/section/lv/officers/ To view or download a Candidate’s Guide, go here: http://www.aaopt.org/section/lv/becoming/
Important: There will be a special info/Q&A meeting for anyone interested in the AAO Low Vision Diplomate Program immediately after the Low Vision Section meeting on Wednesday night in the Laveen Room (Sheraton). This will probably take place about 9 PM.
