Friday, Oct. 26th, Room 228 The Evolution of Competency over a Career Over a career, the evolution of competency is a function of experience and periodic assessment. The initial determination of competency is demonstrated by obtaining the Doctor of Optometry degree and successful passage of written and clinical licensure examinations. Yet, these milestones do not dictate a competency ceiling. This symposium will explore issues related to the evolution of competency over a career. It will address issues including: Who defines entry level and who should define it? How do entry level competencies try to reflect the necessary knowledge, skills and judgment required to practice optometry? What are the factors that impact the evolution of competency? How is continual competency assessed? Information and discussions related to these questions are relevant for practicing clinicians and educators.
