Abstract Cytokeratin (CK) expression patterns have been examined in many human epithelia using immunocytochemistry. Similar studies in the human conjunctival epithelium are few, however, The goal of the present study was to characterize CK, filaggrin and involucrin protein expression in normal human conjunctiva using commercially available monoclonal antibodies (MAb). Using pure nitrocellulose filters, impression cytology specimens (ICS) were obtained from 26 normal volunteers. Specimens were obtained from the four quadrants of the bulbar conjunctiva of each eye. ICS were treated using a streptavidin-biotin immunocytochemical protocol and the following results were obtained. No age, gender or quadrant differences were noted. These results, which are consistent with findings in other mucosa, provide a basis for investigating changes in these proteins in other ocular surface disorders.
