Optometry and Vision Science is published monthly and considers manuscripts on all aspects of the eye and vision including, but not limited to: clinical, experimental, and theoretical studies in optometry, case reports, clinical techniques, public health, epidemiology, optics and instrumentation, and optometric education.

Authors should acquaint themselves with and follow closely the instructions for submission of manuscripts. The Journal follows most of the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors' Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals. The Journal also supports the CONSORT statement for reporting of randomized trials.

Manuscript Requirements
Manuscripts should be submitted using the journal's online system
The manuscript should be double-spaced, with pages numbered consecutively beginning with title page. All measurements should be in metric units with the possible exception of visual acuity. The standard order for the complete manuscript is as follows:

  1. Title page. The first page should give the title of the manuscript and full name, professional designation, highest academic degree(s) plus, if appropriate, FAAO, and institutional affiliation of each author. It should also list the number of figures and tables. It should state the date the paper was submitted.

  2. Abstract. The second page should contain an abstract of not more than 300 words. A four-part structured abstract is preferred: i) background or purpose, ii) methods, iii) results, and iv) conclusions. Do not include references and define all abbreviations. On this same page list at least 5 key words or phrases which may be used to help indexing.

  3. Text. In most cases the body of the manuscript should begin with an untitled introduction followed by Methods, Results, and Discussion. Other formats may be appropriate, for example case reports should follow an introduction - Case report - Discussion format.

  4. Human Subjects and Informed Consent. If human subjects were involved in the study, the authors must confirm that the research followed the tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki, that informed consent was obtained from the subjects after explanation of the nature and possible consequences of the study, and, where applicable, the research was approved by the appropriate institutional review board (IRB).

  5. Acknowledgments (if any). List sources of support in the form of grants or other significant assistance. Disclose any conflicts of interest that may appear to exist, particularly the presence or absence of any financial interest in any of the products mentioned in the manuscript. If the manuscript has been presented in public as a paper or poster, the name, date, and place of that meeting should be included.

  6. References should be double-spaced and in the form currently used in the Journal. References should be numbered consecutively in the order of their citation and should be identified in the text by superscript numbers. The correct format for journal articles is:

Thibos LN, Wheeler W, Horner D. Power vectors: an application of Fourier analysis to the description and statistical analysis of refractive error. Optom Vis Sci 1997;74:367-75.

Authors are responsible for making sure that each reference is correctly cited and listed. It is strongly recommended that authors use a reference management system such as Endnote. Style files containing the journal's format for references are available from the Editorial Office. Do not insert references as footnotes.

The name, mailing address, and email address of the corresponding author should be placed at the end of the list of references.

  7. Tables, each numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals are next. Each table should be double-spaced on a separate page and be accompanied by a brief, self-contained legend. Each column in the table should be given a short heading. Data that can be described in two or three sentences should be presented in the text and not in a table.

  8. Figure legends should be double-spaced, and if possible all should be grouped on one page.

  9. Illustration(s) should each be on a separate page with the figure number and first author's name typed on a gummed label and affixed to the back of each illustration with an arrow showing the top. Cite each figure in the text in consecutive order with Arabic numerals, as Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. No legends should appear on the figures and titles should be avoided.

Manuscripts should be submitted using the journal's online system:
