The Comprehensive Eye Care Section would like to announce the 2018 Ocular Photography Contest. The contest will open on June 15th and close at 11:45 pm CST on August 1st, with the winners being notified by September 1st. Optometrists may submit up to two entries per category (listed below).
The following types of images are accepted for the contest: digital color, red-free, fluorescein angiography/ICG, OCT, HRT, GDx, and B-scan ultrasound. These images of the anterior segment/adnexa or posterior segment must be submitted in one of the following formats: jpg, tiff, gif, or bmp. These images must remain in a non-modified manner, i.e. no enhancements by either proprietary software from which the image was captured, or by programs such as Adobe Photoshop™. No 35 mm slides, photographic prints, or neuro-imaging studies will be accepted. Multiple images, either sequential in time (as in a fluorescein angiogram), or using different technologies to image the same entity (as in a color photo and fluorescein angiography), or to fully appreciate the size of the entity may also be submitted but will be limited to four images per contest entry. Please note that late or incomplete submissions will not be considered. Any image containing potentially identifiable features or information will be discarded.
The images should be submitted under one of the following categories:
1. Anterior Segment: Lids, Conjunctiva, Cornea, Contact Lens, Iris, Lens, Angle/Gonioscopy, Color photo, Anterior Seg OCT
2. Posterior Segment: Vitreous, Optic Nerve, Retina, Color/Red-free photo, Fluorescein Angiography/ICG, Fundus Auto-fluorescence, Posterior Seg OCT, HRT, GDx, B-scan ultrasound
The images will be graded by a panel of judges "blind” to the photographer’s name. Each submission will be graded using seven different criteria, each of which is scored 1-10. The criteria used are as follows: Focus, Exposure, Field of View, Difficulty of Capturing Image, Absence of Distracting Elements, Lighting, and Visual Impact (Wow! Factor).
The Grand Prize winner from each category will receive complimentary registration to Academy 2018 San Antonio and will have the winning image published in the OVS Journal, as well as in the AAO Times Daily paper. In addition to the two Grand Prize winners, the contest will award 4 honorable mentions. All of the winning submissions will be assembled into a photo tower which will be on display at the Academy meeting.
The 2018 contest will implement a simplified online submission process. Further details and instructions will be announced as the contest approaches. If you have any questions, please email contest co-chairs Dr. April M. Lewis and Dr. Melanie Gonzalez-Oliva at AcademyPhotographyContest@gmail.com.
