ADULT NORMATIVE VALUES FOR THE DEVELOPMENTAL EYE MOVEMENT TEST

Erin Nosel

Abstract

PURPOSE. To establish normative values for the Richman-Garzia Developmental Eye Movement test (DEM), which is currently only standardized for patients under 14 years of age. METHOD. We administered the DEM to 61 patients, ages 14 to 34, stratified by age groups. The results were then compiled statistically to give a mean and variance for vertical score, horizontal score, error score, and ratio score for each age group.

RESULTS. The average vertical score was 25.79 seconds, with a standard deviation of 6.11. The average horizontal reading score was 27.50 s +/- 6.86 and the average error reading rate was 0.30 +/- 0.64. Finally the average ratio (horizontal/vertical) score was 1.10 +/- 0.11. Further stratifications by age will be presented.

CONCLUSIONS. There seems to be further development of the horizontal reading-type saccades after age 13. Therefore, it is useful to have adult norms for this well accepted test of reading-type saccades.
