RETINAL NEOVASCULARIZATION AFTER CENTRAL RETINAL ARTERY OCCLUSION

Abstract

The historical prevalence of retinal and disc neovascularization assoicated with central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is extremely low. This is due in part to the abrupt and profound cell death experienced by the inner retinal layers after arterial occlusion. The incidence of rubeosis irides following CRAO ranges from 15 to 20% with the incidence of retinal neovascularization being significantly lower. The case presented is that of an elderly hypertensive and diabetic woman who developed an incomplete CRAO followed approximately 10 months later by retinal neovascularization with vitreous hemorrhage.
