A Call for Change

Published March 25, 2021

Dear Academy members:

The American Academy of Optometry is saddened by the violence being incited against the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. The Academy remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting our communities impacted by such senseless tragedies, and recognizes the mounting anxiety and issues facing our AAPI colleagues.

As an organization comprised of a large number of AAPI individuals, we honor and recognize your feelings of anger, fear, resentment, pain, and grief. We continue to stand against racist violence of any kind and remain committed to supporting change of the systemic racism our colleagues may be facing. We continue peaceful and productive conversations with our sister optometry associations focused on increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion among our optometry community, to ensure our on-going education regarding these matters, which weigh heavily on those most impacted.

Through kindness and empathy, open dialogue and understanding, we will be the change we wish to see. As we work to do so, we implore our Academy Fellows to reach out to one another during this time to lend support, lend an ear, or lend a hand to one of our own who may be in need.

Sincerely,

Timothy McMahon, OD, FAAO
President
